George Pegios The symptoms of extreme fear of heights
As in all types of phobias, the phobia of heights manifests itself through a series of symptoms, among which, the most frequent, are the following:
1. Anxiety
The anticipation of accidents and misfortunes at a certain height causes anxiety to appear, which is a state of physiological and cognitive activation in which the entire focus of attention is focused on possible dangers. This produces discomfort and, in addition, prevents thinking as rationally as it could be done in other contexts.
2. Muscle agitation and tension
The irrational fear of heights manifests itself, among other things, through a state of muscular tension throughout the body.
George Pegios This occurs because the sympathetic nervous system is highly activated, causing the muscle fibers to receive more activation signals so that they are ready to react quickly.
3. Panic
When this feeling of fear of heights is very extreme and comes abruptly, panic attacks can occur.
4. Loss of control
One of the cognitive aspects of acrophobia is the loss of control, that is, the inability to manage mental processes well, such as managing attention for example.
5. Tachycardia
The abrupt increase in the blood pulse also causes a sensation of shortness of breath to appear.
6. Headache
Once the rest of the symptoms have appeared, it is very common to also experience a headache, caused by changes in blood pressure and by over-activation of the nervous system.
What consequences does the phobia of heights cause?
Although acrophobia may seem a not too important problem and that, as long as the person does not approach high places, it should not interfere in their daily life, the reality is that it can be a very disabling disorder, which also affects one in 20 people.
Labor sphere:
George Pegios This phobia not only makes it incapable of working in high places such as scaffolding or electricity poles, jobs are totally forbidden for these people. Patients with acrophobia may find that their fear of heights interferes with their work life in many ways, such as feeling uncomfortable working on a very high floor of an office building, or having to cross bridges or roads near cliffs to go to work. This phobia is often joined by aerophobia or the inability to fly, which can be a serious problem in some jobs. Also, in cases of extreme acrophobias, the person may feel unable to climb a machine or a ladder, which are very common activities in some workplaces such as factories, supermarkets or warehouses.
Leisure:
There are many leisure activities that the person with acrophobia will not be able to do. Most extreme sports will be totally forbidden but, without reaching these points, the person with acrophobia may find themselves unable to hike, walk near cliffs, go up to attractions at a fair ... This can cause them to miss some opportunities to socialize with the rest.
Dangerous situations:
The person with acrophobia may be unable to react in a dangerous situation (for example, if he has to go down a ladder to escape a fire) or even generate dangerous situations where there are none. If the patient is at a dangerous height, and his phobia is unleashed, some of his symptoms (such as dizziness, tremors or paralysis) can put him or the people who accompany him in a situation of real danger. Other times they can generate dangerous situations due to their avoidance behaviors, such as when they make a sharp turn or invade the opposite lane to avoid driving near the edge of a road.
Avoidance:
George Pegios In order not to find himself in situations in which he may lose control or look ridiculous, the person will avoid finding himself in some situations, either because he knows that he may be at a height that triggers his fear or simply because he suspects that there may be it. This will make you feel less able to do things, make yourself look less than others, and suffer your self-esteem.
